In Ancient Rome, rhetoric was considered the most important part of a good education. There were no public schools, only private schools, therefore the poor went to a private school. A public school was called a "Ludus Publicus". Students would refer to their teachers as a "magister". The richer stayed at home to be tutored with a neighborhood group consisting of 3-7 children, and children from poorer familys went to school. The most common way to write in Ancient Rome was with a stylus on a wax writing tablet. The hardest way to write was to carve into wood or stone with a sharp, metal stylus.
